    Ministry of Education Approves Upgrade of Educational Level and Expansion of Enrollment Scale for WUST-Madrid Complutense Institute

    WUST News  Recently, Wuhan University of Science and Technology (WUST) received an official approval letter from the Ministry of Education (MOE), granting approval for the WUST-Madrid Complutense Institute (WMCI) to upgrade its educational level and expand its enrollment scale. This decision fully affirms the quality and development achievements of WUST’s Chinese-foreign cooperation in running schools, marking a historic breakthrough for the university’s internationalization drive featuring integrated bachelor-master education, expanded scale and upgraded disciplines.

    According to the MOE approval, the WMCI will achieve four major breakthrough upgrades. First, it has achieved a strategic upgrade in educational level, officially expanding from a single undergraduate education level to a multi-level collaborative system integrating undergraduate education, postgraduate education for academic degrees, and foreign master’s degree education, fully establishing a world-class international talent training system with integrated bachelor-master pathways and Sino-foreign collaboration. Second, it will see a leapfrog expansion in enrollment scale, with the total student capacity increasing from 1,200 to 3,720. The annual undergraduate enrollment quota will rise from 300 to 800, with an additional annual enrollment of 40 students for postgraduate academic degree programs and 200 students for foreign master’s degree programs, significantly enhancing the university’s talent training supply capacity. Third, it will realize a systematic improvement in disciplinary layout. Building on its existing three undergraduate programs (Robotics Engineering, Information and Computation Science, and Statistics), the institute will add the Electronic Information Engineering undergraduate program. Concurrently, it will launch two postgraduate academic degree programs (Electronic Information and Applied Statistics) and two foreign master’s degree programs (Artificial Intelligence, and Data Science and Business Intelligence), forming a high-level disciplinary and professional matrix covering electronic information, artificial intelligence, data science, statistics and other fields. Finally, it will implement standardized innovation in the admission system. Undergraduate programs will be included in the national unified college admission plan, postgraduate academic degree programs in the national postgraduate admission plan, and foreign master’s degree programs will implement independent enrollment. Admission standards shall not be lower than those of the main campus of Complutense University of Madrid, ensuring homogeneous and equivalent student quality with international standards.

    The WMCI features distinctive and advantageous training models. Undergraduate programs adopt a 4+0 training model, postgraduate academic degree programs a 3+0 model, and foreign master’s degree programs a 2+0 model, allowing students to complete all their studies in China. Students enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate academic degree programs may register for dual student status at both universities. Upon completion of their studies and meeting the academic requirements of both institutions, they will receive the graduation certificate and degree certificate from WUST, as well as the corresponding degree certificate from Complutense University of Madrid, enabling them to obtain dual degrees from prestigious universities without studying abroad.

    The WMCI is a non-independent legal person Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run school jointly established by WUST and Complutense University of Madrid, Spain’s top-ranked university. It serves as an important landmark platform for high-level opening-up of education among provincial universities in Hubei Province. Since launching enrollment in 2025, the institute has adhered to high-start planning, high-standard construction and high-quality operation.
