WUST News Juan Carlos, Director of the International Department of Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), and his delegation visited WUST on June 2. Xu Yanbing, Party Secretary, together with Principal Ni Hongwei and Vice Principal LV Yong met with the guests.
Xu Yanbing welcomed the arrival of Juan Carlos and his delegation, introduced the history and basics of WUST, elaborated WUST's running situation and the Sino-foreign cooperation, and described the blueprint of cooperation between WUST and UCM. Xu Yanbing mentioned that WUST is the pacesetters of universities operated by the Hubei provincial government and that WUST is competent, confident and purposive to cooperate with UCM to establish a Sino-Spain cooperative education institution. He anticipates that both sides will work together to create a high-quality model of Chinese foreign cooperation in school running.
At the symposium, Ni Hongwei welcomed Mr. Juan Carlos and his delegation and introduced WUST's scientific research, talent cultivation, application of scientific and technological advances, and international education. Ni Hongwei mentioned that 2023 is the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Spain. With the continuous exchanges and cooperation in all aspects between two countries, broad space for cooperation between WUST and UCM will open up. He hopes that both sides can take advantage of this opportunity to deepen understanding, enhance friendship, and promote cooperation.
Juan Carlos briefly introduced the basic situation and overseas cooperation projects of UCM. He indicated that UCM attaches great importance to cooperation with WUST. The establishment of a Sino-Spain cooperative educational institution with WUST is the second overseas cooperative institution of UCM after its cooperation with Harvard University in the U.S. He hopes that both parties can take this cooperation as an opportunity to achieve complementary advantages and mutual benefit by closer contact and further communication.
Juan Carlos and LV Yong signed a cooperation agreement on behalf of the two universities.
The leaders of WUST's Party and Government Office, International Exchange and Cooperation Office, Development Planning and Discipline Construction Office, and Undergraduate School attended the meeting.
UCM is the oldest, largest and the most comprehensive university in Spain, with a history of 700 years. In 2024, it ranked 171st on the QS World University Rankings with seven Nobel Prize winners. There are currently 80,000 students studying in this university currently, including approximately 9,000 international students. (Office of International Relations)
