From October 31 to November 1, the 13th CSM (The Chinese Society for Metals) Youth Academic Conference was convened at WUST’s Qingshan Campus. The conference was co-hosted by the CSM, the CSM Youth Work Committee and Wuhan University of Science and Technology, with Yizhong Group (Heilongjiang) Engineering Equipment Co., Ltd. as a joint sponsor. Ni Hongwei, Secretary of the CPC WUST Committee, and Lü Yong, President of WUST, attended the opening ceremony.

With the theme Youth Research Forges Metallurgical Pathways, Materials Innovation Opens New Chapters, the conference focuses on cutting-edge issues and emerging research directions in the fields of metallurgy and materials. It featured 7 plenary keynote lectures and 21 parallel sessions, with 429 long abstracts accepted. Drawing over 600 delegates, the event enabled in-depth exchanges on the latest research findings, development trends and future prospects of the discipline.

At the opening ceremony, Tian Zhiling, Executive Vice President of the CSM, Ni Hongwei, Secretary of the CPC WUST Committee, and Chang Hai from the CSM Youth Work Committee delivered speeches respectively on behalf of the organizers.

On behalf of the university, Ni Hongwei extended a warm welcome to the participating leaders, experts and scholars. He noted that Wuhan University of Science and Technology was founded for the steel industry and has thrived alongside it, and its leading disciplines such as metallurgical engineering have always kept in step with industrial development. Taking the hosting of this academic conference as an opportunity, the university will deepen collaborative innovation with the society, peer universities and industrial enterprises, build a broader platform for the growth of young scientific and technological workers, and jointly advance the high-end, intelligent and green transformation of the metallurgical and materials industry.

A number of academicians and renowned experts were invited to deliver keynote speeches at the conference. Academician Mao Xinping from University of Science and Technology Beijing gave a speech entitled Cultivation of Young Scientific and Technological Talents: Reflections and Practices, encouraging young scholars to pursue both academic competence and practical strength, and integrate their personal academic aspirations into the overall landscape of national development. Professor Zhou Jian’an, Dean of WUST’s Research Institute of Steel-Chemical Co-production, delivered a plenary report titled Preparation of Olefins via Coupled Modification of High-Temperature Converter Flue Gas and Biomass. Focusing on carbon emission reduction and high-value resource utilization in steel manufacturing processes, he introduced the technical concept and process route of producing olefins through the coupled modification of high-temperature converter flue gas and biomass, and expounded the potential of steel-chemical co-production in cutting carbon emissions and expanding the product mix of iron and steel enterprises, fully demonstrating WUST’s research strength in green and low-carbon metallurgy.

The opening ceremony and plenary sessions were presided over respectively by Wang Xinjiang, Vice President and Secretary-General of the CSM, Ye Hengdi, Chief Scientist of China Minmetals Corporation, Zhang Hua, Executive Dean of WUST’s School of Metallurgy and Energy Engineering, and Yang Yongqiang, head of the CSM Youth Work Committee.

From the afternoon of October 31 through November 1, 21 thematic parallel sessions were organized covering metallurgical geology, iron making and raw materials, steel making and continuous casting and other fields, with over 400 high-quality presentations delivered through oral speeches and poster exchanges. The 16th CSM Metallurgical Youth Science and Technology Award was also presented at the opening ceremony, honoring 20 awardees.

Founded in 2002, the CSM Youth Academic Conference is a flagship academic event of the society dedicated to young scientific and technological workers. The hosting of this year’s conference at WUST is a full recognition of the university’s educational strength and disciplinary level, and also provides a valuable opportunity for WUST faculty and students to engage in close dialogue with top experts in the industry and broaden their academic horizons. The university will continue to deepen industry-university-research integration and contribute WUST’s strength to the high-quality development of the metallurgical and materials industry.
