WUST website news (correspondent: Qin Maolin) Recently, ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2020 (ARUW 2020) has been released by ShanghaiRanking. Six subjects of WUST appear on the list, including metallurgical engineering, mechanical engineering, energy science and engineering, electrical & electronic engineering, computer science and engineering, and chemical engineering.

16 subjects from 6 universities in Hubei Province appear on the list. The number of listed subjects of WUST increases by one compared with that in 2019, maintaining the largest number of subjects and the highest overall ranking among universities in Hubei.

ARUW covers 54 subjects in five major fields including science, engineering, life science, medicine and social sciences. WUST reviews subjects from more than 4,000 universities in the world, of which 1,800 universities from 90 countries and regions appeared in the list of various subjects.

WUST adopts a series of internationally comparable objective academic indicators to measure the performance of global universities in specific subjects. The main indicators include: the number of papers published on important journals, for which the article-type papers in journals among the top 25% journal impact factors collected to the corresponding subjects of InCites in the past 5 years (2014-2018) are counted; the influence of paper standardization, for which the average ratio of the citation frequency of the article-type papers collected to the corresponding subjects of InCites to the citation frequency ratio of papers in the same publication year, same subject, and same literature type in the past 5 years is counted; the proportion of internationally cooperative papers, for which the proportion of the article-type papers collected to the corresponding subjects of InCites and containing the address of foreign institutions in the past 5 years is counted; the number of papers in top journals, for which the number of papers published in 151 top academic journals of 47 subjects and 22 top academic conferences of computer science and engineering selected in ShanghaiRanking’s “Academic Excellence Survey” is counted; the number of authoritative awards won by teachers, for which the equivalent number of the most authoritative international awards won by teachers in the subject since 1981 is counted.
