WUST News August 8-10, the 2024 Greater Bay Area Low-Carbon Metallurgy and Advanced Metal Materials Technology Exchange Conference, jointly organized by the Chinese Society for Metals and Guangdong University of Technology, was held in Guangzhou. The conference was attended by over 400 experts, including academicians Gan Yong, Wang Guodong, Zhang Yue, Liu Zhengdong, Yue Qingrui, and Han Enhou from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, as well as scholars from universities, representatives from local governments, and industry representatives. President Ni Hongwei was invited to attend the conference and delivered a keynote speech entitled “Strengthening Interdisciplinary Collaboration to Promote Low-Carbon Metallurgy”.
President Ni Hongwei introduced that Wuhan University of Science and Technology has "grown from steel and thrived on steel", focusing on "steel as the main body and refractory as the specialty". The university has developed a prominent advantage in the field of "iron and steel metallurgy". At present, the WUST is optimizing its academic ecology based on the "one framework, two wings, and three new branches" disciplinary development layout, and is building a comprehensive university disciplinary system centered on engineering, combining engineering and science, and promoting coordinated development among multiple disciplines, to cater to the needs of industries such as low-carbon metallurgy, modern manufacturing, and big health.
He pointed out that under the national "dual-carbon" strategy and the background of interdisciplinary development, strengthening interdisciplinary cooperation has become a necessary choice to promot the development of low-carbon metallurgy. Technological innovation in low-carbon metallurgy must concentrate the advantages of multiple disciplines and carry out "metallurgy + N" interdisciplinary research. The WUST has been focusing on the green development of the steel industry, continuously optimizing its disciplinary and professional layout, actively building interdisciplinary platform teams, and striving to cultivate low-carbon metallurgical professionals. It has achieved fruitful results in the research and industrialization of low-carbon metallurgical technologies, such as key technologies for the efficient metallurgy of low-quality iron ore resources and safe, efficient, green, and low-carbon converter gas recovery technology. WUST will further strengthen cooperation with governments and enterprises in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, actively take advantage of interdisciplinary cooperation to cultivate new productive forces, and contribute to accelerating the national "dual-carbon" goals and building a new development pattern for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
The conference, themed "Low-Carbon Metallurgy and Green Steel", aims to jointly explore cutting-edge issues in the steel industry, exchange advanced production technologies in various directions, and build a cross-discipline and cross-industry exchange platform to promote the innovation and application of low-carbon metallurgical technologies and advancethe green upgrading and high-quality development of the advanced metal materials industry.
