WUST News A pioneering multi-center research project, led by Professor Gao Wei's team at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Tianyou Hospital Affiliated to WUST, aims to transform clinical medicine education for undergraduate medical students. This innovative study seeks to establish a connection between undergraduate clinical medicine education and postgraduate medical education (standardized training for resident physicians) by investigating new teaching methodologies. The study introduces a novel approach to clinical medicine education for undergraduate students, which employs a combination of video feedback and peer role-playing techniques. This methodology exploits the advantages of both external and internal feedback, as well as their synergistic effects, to optimize the learning experience for future medical professionals. The research findings have recently been published online in the international top-level (JCR 1 zone) journal BMC Medical Education, entitled “Video Feedback Combined with Peer Role-Playing: A Method to Improve the Teaching Effect of Medical Undergraduates”.

In the context of teaching, feedback represents a crucial element of the learning process. However, the absence of feedback in medical education represents a persistent challenge. The provision of high-quality feedback has the potential to facilitate the learning and professional development of medical students. In this study, the research team selected a total of 67 five-year clinical medicine undergraduates who had adopted small-class teaching and divided them into a study group and a control group. In the study group, the teaching method of combining video feedback with peer role-playing was employed in the form of "groups within groups". The findings of the study demonstrate that this pedagogical approach is efficacious in the context of clinical medical education for medical undergraduates. Such an approach can stimulate students' interest in active learning, enhance their interpersonal skills, improve their learning efficiency and clinical knowledge and skills, and foster confidence in their ability to become competent doctors.

Gao Wei posited that the utilisation of a pedagogical approach that integrates video feedback with peer role-playing among medical undergraduates is conducive to circumventing the pitfalls of a monolithic teaching methodology and enhancing the efficacy of instructional tools. Simultaneously, it is also conducive to capitalising on the benefits of internal and external feedback and their harmonious integration to foster a seamless continuum between undergraduate clinical medical education and postgraduate medical education (residency standardised training).

JCR Q1 journals represent the pinnacle of international academic excellence. The publication of this research result marks the inaugural paper published by the Tianyou Hospital Affiliated to WUST in the field of clinical medical education in JCR Q1 journals. It addresses a notable gap in top-level SCI papers in the field of medical education within the hospital and plays a constructive role in advancing the ongoing reform and innovation of clinical medical education at WUST.
